Parent Feedback Study on MIASA Scales

In February 2025, Northwest Psychometric conducted a feedback study with parents of middle (grade 6-8; n=121) and high school (grade 9-12; n=117) students to evaluate the appropriateness of the MIASA scales. Before providing feedback, parents were given a brief overview of a school psychologist's responsibilities. They were then asked to provide their opinion as a parent about the appropriateness of a number of different topics for an assessment being conducted middle school or high schoolers. A number of scales and two domains were dropped from the School Edition based on the feedback from parents. Below is a sample of results of the parent’s appropriateness ratings.

* Scale dropped from School Edition because appropriateness rating was below 70%.

Parents included comments that provided crucial insights. Comments included:

“The items I determined might be inappropriate were not necessarily because I object to the content of the question, but rather whether the school is resourced to handle any outcomes. I limited the appropriate items to the things I thought a school could reasonably handle if there was a negative response that required further help for the student.”

“I think that it is important for kids to feel safe in school and a lot of these issues will greatly affect their performance and comfort in the school setting. Whether positive or negative, they need a safe space to discuss such issues and school counselors should be aware and be able to reach out to those that need help”

“This generation of children are being exposed to so many "adult" issues because of social media and peer interactions. Even though these are complicated topics that most parents may want to put off until later, they need to be addressed before irreparable emotional damage is done to the child. This is the world we live in now.”
